How Mazda G-Vectoring Control Makes Driving More Engaging

How Mazda G-Vectoring Control Makes Driving More Engaging

For a few years now, most Mazda vehicles have benefitted from a technology called G-Vectoring Control which makes them more fun to drive and more enjoyable for everyone on board. Here are a few details about this system.

What is G-Vectoring Control?

This technology installed in Mazda vehicles since 2017 is a system that makes the powertrain control module and the electric power steering module talk to each other with the goal of improving handling and reducing strain and fatigue for the driver. The G-Vectoring Plus version introduced in the 2019 CX-5 also acts on the rear brakes to reach a greater level of effectiveness.

What does it do?

G-Vectoring Control helps make Mazda vehicles more pleasant to drive and ride in by providing subtle adjustments to the engine’s torque output when entering or exiting corners and bends. Once the driver begins steering into a curve, the power steering module sends a signal to G-Vectoring Control, which then calculates the exact force needed to shift the weight balance of the vehicle toward the front wheels in order to provide a more precise control over the steering system and thus limit the need for mid corner corrections. To do so, the powertrain control module seamlessly adjusts the engine’s timing to slightly reduce its torque output.

When exiting a corner, the driver gradually returning the steering wheel to its center position triggers the G-Vectoring Control system to command an increase in the torque output in order to shift the weight back to the rear wheels and thus provide more stable and dynamic handling characteristics. In vehicles equipped with G-Vectoring Control Plus, the outside rear wheel is also braked slightly to help the car straighten out faster and more easily.

What are the other benefits?

As mentioned previously, G-Vectoring Control in Mazda vehicles is not only meant to improve handling and driving dynamics, as it also reduces driver fatigue and passenger enjoyment. This is because, while its effects are usually difficult to notice, they make for a significant improvement in driving smoothness by reducing the need for steering adjustments, which can make for a jerky ride.
