Three tips when buying your first car

Buying your first vehicle is one of the most exciting experiences that you will ever have. No doubt about it, you will remember your first vehicle probably for your entire life. The only thing you want to make sure, is that you remember it for the right reasons. With that in mind, here are three tips that are sure to help you purchase your first car and make sure that that car will be remembered fondly for years to come and not as a big mistake.

Plan Your Budget Ahead of Time

The most important part of buying your first vehicle is making sure that it fits within your budget. In order to do so, you have to make sure let you know what that budget is, and that it will not create a situation where your next car becomes debt that you can’t get rid of and that impedes your future finances.

What really matters when calculating your new vehicle budget is that you have to take into account the other costs associated with owning a vehicle. Costs such as fuel, insurance, registrations, vehicle maintenance, vehicle repairs, winter and summer tires, and even things like tickets and parking have to be calculated because you will have to pay these when you have your car.

As a general rule of thumb, you want to add about 50% to the cost of the monthly payment to get a complete picture of what your next car will actually cost. So, if your budget can fit a monthly payment of about $450, you have to figure that your next vehicle can only account for about $300 per month with the rest being saved for all of the other expenses that come with owning a vehicle.

Make Sure You Account for How Your Needs Will Change

If this is your first vehicle, it is a safe bet that you are young, and you have yet to actually start a family or a career. If that is indeed the case, then you have to make sure that your vehicle will not only meet your needs today but will also meet your needs further down the road. You will likely own this vehicle for 4 or 5 years, maybe even longer. That means that it has to be spacious enough we’re at the very least it simply has to be enjoyable for the short, medium, and long-term.

Buy a Reliable Vehicle

We talked about planning for vehicle repairs and maintenance in the budget portion of this article. Even if you plan ahead for the costs associated with repairs, that doesn’t mean that you don’t care about having to pay for them. You want to research vehicle reliability, and you want to make sure that the vehicle you buy has a reputation for being dependable.
