Everything to Know About Google Gemini in the All-New Mazda CX-5
October 26 2026,
Google Gemini is now part of the all-new Mazda CX-5. Mazda Canada announced on October 26, 2026, that Gemini is available to eligible users in CX-5 models equipped with Google built-in, bringing a more conversational voice experience to Canadian drivers.
New tech tends to raise a lot of questions. Which trims have it? What can it do? Do you still get Apple CarPlay? What do you need to set it up? We answer each one below in plain language, so you have the full picture in one place.
What Is Google Gemini?
Gemini is an AI assistant from Google. In the all-new CX-5, it lets you communicate with your vehicle using everyday language. Mazda says you do not need to rely on specific voice commands anymore.
Gemini understands context and follow-up requests. It handles multi-step conversations, so you can ask a question, then ask another about the answer, without starting from scratch.
Which CX-5 Trims Have Google Built-In?
All of them. Google built-in is standard on the CX-5 GX, GS and GT. It brings Google Maps, apps from Google Play and Gemini into the vehicle’s centre display.
The GX, GS and GT use a 12.9-inch full-colour centre touchscreen. The GT Premium Package, which requires the Panoramic Roof Package, upgrades to a 15.6-inch touchscreen, the largest display Mazda has ever offered.
What Can Gemini Do in the CX-5?
Mazda lists six main abilities:
- Continue tasks, searches and conversations started on your smartphone through compatible Google services
- Find destinations, restaurants and points of interest with conversational requests and follow-up questions
- Use Google Maps for real-time traffic updates, route guidance and personalized recommendations
- Play entertainment through apps such as Spotify and YouTube Music, including playlist suggestions for your mood or activity
- Send messages, share arrival times and manage communications hands-free
- Adjust supported vehicle functions, including climate settings, and access vehicle information with everyday speech
Do I Still Get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every all-new CX-5. The GX connects with a cable. The GS and GT connect wirelessly and add a wireless phone charger. Drivers can choose the setup that suits them: Google built-in with Gemini, smartphone mirroring, or both on different days.
What Do I Need to Use Gemini?
Mazda’s fine print lists a few conditions:
- Gemini is available to eligible users with Google built-in.
- Some connected apps require setup.
- Compatibility and availability vary.
- Users must be 18 or older.
- A compatible Android phone and a compatible active data plan are listed among the requirements.
Will Gemini Keep Getting Better?
Mazda says Gemini is designed to deliver more personalized assistance that can continue to evolve through future software updates, expanded functionality and additional language support. The latest Mazda Connect system in the CX-5 is also designed to accept over-the-air updates.
How Does Gemini Help Me Keep My Eyes on the Road?
This is the main reason Mazda brought Gemini to the CX-5. By letting you speak naturally, Gemini reduces how often you need to look at menus and settings. Mazda says this supports its human-centric approach to design, where technology helps the driver without competing for attention.
Other parts of the cabin follow the same idea. Climate and volume controls are docked at the bottom of the touchscreen. Steering wheel buttons put volume and audio source on the left and driving functions on the right. On the GS and GT, a windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display shows navigation guidance and traffic signs where you are already looking.
What Powers the Rest of the CX-5?
Every all-new CX-5 uses a 2.5 L 4-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive.
