2026 CX-5 Adds 4.5 Inches Length, Google Built-In Tech

Mazda's comprehensive redesign of the CX-5 for 2026 focuses on two key improvements: substantially increased dimensions and integrated Google technology. The third-generation crossover grows while incorporating advanced connectivity features that transform the driving experience.

The dimensional increases address longstanding customer requests for more interior space and cargo capacity. Combined with Google built-in technology, the 2026 CX-5 delivers both physical and digital upgrades that enhance daily usability for Canadian families.

Substantial Size Increases

The 2026 CX-5 receives major dimensional improvements that create noticeable benefits throughout the vehicle. Mazda extended the overall length by 4.5 inches while increasing the wheelbase by the same amount, maximizing interior space gains.

Width increases by over half an inch, contributing to a more spacious cabin feeling. These changes enable larger door openings that make entry and exit easier, particularly beneficial for parents installing child seats or loading elderly passengers.

The cargo area benefits from the increased length. The rear storage space extends almost two inches longer and rises over an inch higher than the previous generation. Mazda also lowered the lift-in height by more than half an inch, reducing the effort required to load heavy items.

Dimensional Improvements:

  • 4.5 inches added to overall length and wheelbase
  • Over 0.5 inches wider exterior dimensions
  • Almost 2 inches longer cargo area
  • Over 1 inch higher cargo space
  • Lift-in height reduced by more than 0.5 inches

Google Integration Benefits

The technology upgrade centers on Google built-in functionality that brings familiar smartphone features directly into the vehicle. The 15.6-inch touchscreen display serves as the command center for this connected experience.

Google Maps provides navigation with real-time traffic updates and fresh location data. The system helps Canadian drivers avoid congestion and find efficient routes across urban and rural areas.

The Google Play Store offers access to curated, vehicle-compatible applications. Music streaming, news, and entertainment apps integrate with the driving experience, while future over-the-air updates will add new features and capabilities.

Performance and Efficiency Balance

The 2026 CX-5 retains Mazda's proven 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine, producing 187 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive system.

Mazda engineers recalibrated the engine for the new CX-5, emphasizing both responsive performance and refined operation. The system adapts to driving style, delivering sharp acceleration when needed while maintaining quiet, efficient operation during regular driving.

Design and Safety Evolution

The exterior design reflects Mazda's evolved Kodo philosophy with a more chiseled front end featuring the Signature Wing grille. Angular lighting elements and available 19-inch wheels enhance the vehicle's stance and visual presence.

Interior craftsmanship showcases Mazda's Japanese attention to detail. Seven-colour ambient lighting on front door trims creates a calming environment while high-quality materials and finishes contribute to a refined cabin atmosphere.

Safety technology continues the CX-5's legacy as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award winner. The 2026 model includes an expanded suite of Advanced Driver Assistance System features designed to enhance protection and build driver confidence.

Hybrid Technology Coming

While the 2026 CX-5 launches with the proven 2.5-litre engine, Mazda plans to introduce a hybrid variant in 2027. The new SkyActiv-Z engine will feature Mazda Hybrid System technology for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.

Experience the Improvements

The larger and more connected 2026 Mazda CX-5 arrives at Canadian dealerships in Spring 2026. The combination of increased dimensions and Google built-in technology addresses key customer priorities.
