2022 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2022 Kia Sportage: The CX-5 is All About the Drive

2022 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2022 Kia Sportage: The CX-5 is All About the Drive

The Mazda CX-5 has always been the favourite vehicle of drivers who want more than just a mode of transportation. It offers unparalleled styling, as well as an interior that rivals most luxury brands. But at the heart of the CX-5 lies some of the best powertrain choices in the industry. This year, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 receives a few key upgrades as well as standard i-Activ AWD across the lineup.

Here, we compare the 2022 Mazda CX-5 to the 2023 Kia Sportage.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 delivers more torque and driving dynamics

Although the Kia Sportage has received a few enhancements for 2023, it is still behind the CX-5 in terms of pure driving dynamics. The Mazda CX-5 lineup starts with a powerful and efficient 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Most Sportage models use a similar engine with similar performance, but are offered with standard FWD and optional AWD. The CX-5 starts with AWD right out of the gate.

For maximum performance the CX-5 brings a powerful turbocharged engine to the table. It is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The Kia Sportage also includes more powerful engine options, but they cannot catch up to the turbocharged CX-5 in regards to torque. And that’s where the driving enjoyment comes from, thanks to better accelerations and overall performance.

The CX-5 also offers a more precise ride thanks to a more advanced chassis and standard G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus). The Kia Sportage is not designed to provide enjoyment on the road.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is more refined and more advanced

Once you sit comfortably inside the CX-5’s cabin, you will understand that Mazda’s designers and engineers have used everything at their disposal to provide a refined driving environment, using upscale textures, enhanced materials and unparalleled craftsmanship. The new Kia Sportage still uses a lot of budget-oriented plastics and basic textures.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a sportier, more stylish and more refined SUV that features more equipment, better performance and more advanced driving dynamics compared to the Kia Sportage. The Invisible Hand: How Mazda's G-Vectoring Control Makes You a Smoother, Better Driver

You've probably felt it without knowing what it was. That moment when your Mazda takes a corner just a little smoother than you expected. When merging onto the 401 feels more controlled. When navigating the curves around Scarborough Bluffs requires less steering correction than usual. That subtle assistance comes from G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus), a technology that works behind the... Read more
